Morton scores twice as the Loggers topple Whitworth, 5-2

Box Score

TACOMA, Washington – Lura Morton scored twice, including the game-winner, as the Puget Sound women's soccer team beat Whitworth, 5-2, on Peyton Field Sunday afternoon.

Both of Morton's goals came early in the first half. The sophomore received a through-ball from Kendra Elderkin down the middle of the field, and Morton put a shot over the Whitworth (1-5, 0-2 NWC) goalkeeper and just under the crossbar to give Puget Sound (5-1, 2-0 NWC) a 2-1 edge.

Just 90 seconds letter, Morton displayed amazing athleticism on an individual effort as she beat two Pirates defenders off the dribble and fired a shot from eight yards out into the back of the net.

Whitworth opened the game with fervor and the Pirates nearly scored in the early minutes, but Puget Sound defender Veronica Chung cleared a shot attempt off the goal line to keep the game scoreless. Whitworth broke through to take a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.

Kendra Elderkin's first goal of the season tied the game in the 30th minute when she blasted a shot from 20 yards out into the top-left corner of the goal. Erin Brosnan assisted on the goal.

Jacquelyn Anderson scored on a penalty kick in the second half – her second goal this weekend – and Grayson Williams-Krebs came away with her fourth goal of the season.

Puget Sound carries its five-game winning streak into George Fox on Saturday, Sept. 24, for a 12 p.m. kickoff.
