Despite holding a halftime lead, Loggers lose at No. 8 Whitworth

SPOKANE, Washington – Despite holding a six-point lead at halftime, the Puget Sound men's basketball team lost at No. 8 Whitworth, 77-65, on Friday night.

The Loggers (9-5, 2-3 NWC) raced out to a seven-point lead after a 3-pointer by Kohl Meyer put Puget Sound ahead, 9-2, 2:20 into the game. Whitworth (12-2, 3-2 NWC) tied the score, 9-9, but the Loggers opened things up with an 11-2 run.

Andre Lewis' 3-pointer with 8:14 on the clock gave Puget Sound a 20-11 lead. Three minutes later, Lewis' layup allowed the Loggers to double up on the Pirates, 30-15. Whitworth closed out the half on a 13-4 run to cut the Loggers' lead to 34-28 at halftime.

Whitworth claimed its first lead since early in the first half when Kenny Love's 3-pointer gave the Pirates a 46-45 advantage 7:30 into the second half. A 3-pointer by Jimmy Wohrer evened the score, 52-52, with 8:55 on the clock, but Whitworth promptly went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good.

After shooting 45.2 percent from the floor in the first half, the Loggers shot 30.3 percent in the final 20 minutes.

Wohrer led the Loggers with 19 points, and Meyer added 11 points to go with nine rebounds and four assists.

The Loggers have another tough task when they play at No. 2 Whitman on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m.
