TACOMA, Washington – Elizabeth Prewitt led all players in scoring with 27 points, but the Puget Sound women's basketball team lost to No. 8/9 Whitman, 80-69, in Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday evening.

Prewitt took over the Puget Sound (4-2, 1-1 NWC) offense in the third quarter, netting 14 points by shooting 5-for-7 from the floor in the 10-minute period. Whitman (6-1, 2-0 NWC) held a 37-31 lead at halftime. Prewitt provided the first second-half points for the Loggers with a pair of free-throws. One minute later, she made a layup that cut the deficit to 39-35.

In the middle of the third quarter, Prewitt scored four points in a 40-second span, as the Loggers kept within striking distance, 43-39, with 6:05 left to play in the third. Following a defensive stop by the Loggers, Prewitt hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to make it a one-point game, 43-42.

The Loggers got one more defensive stop, and Jamie Lange hit a layup to give Puget Sound a 44-43 edge. However, Whitman quickly regained the lead and did not relinquish it for the rest of the game.

Lange scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Mara Henderson and Claire Fitzgerald finished with nine points, apiece.

The teams were nearly even in shooting. The Loggers shot 51 percent from the floor, while Whitman shot 49.3 percent.

Puget Sound hits the road for a short bus ride to Evergreen State on Wednesday, Dec. 6, for a 7 p.m. tip.
