TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound volleyball team opened its 2017 season in dominant fashion. The Loggers won both of their matches in the opening day of the Puget Sound Premiere in Memorial Fieldhouse on Friday.

Puget Sound 3, Edgewood 0

The Loggers limited Edgewood to just a .052 hitting percentage as Puget Sound opened the 2017 season with a convincing 3-0 win over the Eagles. Hannah Stinson – the reigning Northwest Conference Player of the Year – led the Loggers with seven kills and a .312 hitting percentage. Renee Kenneally totaled a game-high 18 assists, and Kristen Miguel led Puget Sound in digs with 13. 

The Loggers held a 19-12 lead in the first set, but the Eagles rallied to cut Puget Sound's advantage to 20-18. However, a pair of Edgewood errors followed by a Shelby Kantner kill gave Puget Sound a five-point edge. The Loggers won the first set, 25-21.

In the second set, the Loggers once again held a commanding seven-point lead, 18-11. The Eagles were able to battle back and even the score, 19-19. A kill from Stinson and two aces by Katarina Moffett sealed the set.

Puget Sound built a 15-5 lead in the third set, and Edgewood could not muster the energy to piece together a comeback as Puget Sound won handedly, 25-14.

Puget Sound 3, St. Benedict 1

Rita Dexter put away 13 kills and finished with a remarkable .545 hitting percentage as the Loggers (2-0) beat St. Benedict (0-2), 3-1, in their second game of the Puget Sound Premiere.

The Loggers raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first set, and Moira McVicar's kill completed a 25-19 victory in the opening frame. The Blazers (0-2) bounced back with a 25-18 win in the second set, but Puget Sound put St. Benedict away with a 25-21 win in the third set and a 25-23 win in a dramatic fourth.

The Loggers had a 16-9 lead in the fourth set, but the Blazers rallied to take a 20-18 edge. Puget Sound maintained its composure, and an ace by Hannah Stinson evened the score, 21-21. The score was tied, 23-23, when Alli Reviglio's killed allowed the Loggers to regain the lead. An error by St. Benedict ended the game in favor of the Loggers.

Rachael Garrison led all players with 22 digs, and McVicar finished with a team-high 20 assists.

The Puget Sound Premiere continues on Saturday, Sept. 2, when the Loggers take on Clarkson (9 a.m.) and St. Thomas (7 p.m.).
