Box Score 2 TACOMA, Washington – The Logger volleyball team wrapped up the Puget Sound Premiere with a pair of losses against teams on the brink of cracking into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 National Poll. Both Clarkson and St. Thomas received votes in the preseason poll, and the Puget Sound Premiere continues to grow as one of the most prominent volleyball tournaments in NCAA D-III.
Puget Sound 1, Clarkson 3
Hannah Stinson led all players with 14 kills, and Rachael Garrison finished with a team-high 22 digs, but the Loggers lost in four sets against Clarkson, 3-1.
Stinson finished with a .367 hitting percentage and added three blocks. She totaled 18 points in all for the Loggers.
After dropping the first set, 25-22, the Loggers entered the second set on a mission. The Golden Knights held a 5-3 lead before Puget Sound went on a 7-0 run. Stinson recorded three kills during that stretch, and Katarina Moffett added a pair of service aces and a kill of her own. Clarkson tied up the score, 15-15, but a kill by Stinson ignited a 6-1 run for the Loggers.
Despite losing the third set by a wide margin, 25-11, Puget Sound came out with a vengeance for the fourth set. The Loggers jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but four consecutive Puget Sound errors allowed the Golden Knights to take a 17-13 lead.
A service error by Clarkson brought the Loggers to within two, 21-19, but the Golden Knights rattled off four consecutive points to seal the win.
Puget Sound committed 27 errors and attacked at a .080 clip.
Puget Sound 0, St. Thomas 3
Despite playing some its best volleyball of the weekend, the Loggers (2-2) lost in three sets against perennial powerhouse St. Thomas (3-1).
Moira McVicar led all players with 29 assists, and Hannah Stinson once again led the Loggers' attack with a team-high 11 kills. Puget Sound committed only 12 errors, compared to the Tommes' 16, but St. Thomas attacked at a .234 percentage. The Loggers hit .188 on the evening.
Puget Sound heads south for a tournament at Soutwestern (Tex.) starting on Friday, Sept. 8. The Loggers are scheduled to play Christopher Newport, East Texas Batist, and hosts Southwestern (Tex.).
