Box Score SPOKANE, Washington – Backed by 26 points and 14 rebounds by Jamie Lange, the Puget Sound women's basketball team beat Whitworth, 72-67, Saturday evening. The Loggers won eight consecutive games against the Pirates.
Lange notched her 12th double-double this season, while shooting 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. Elizabeth Prewitt scored 15 points for the Loggers (9-10, 4-6 NWC), and Cassidy Daugherty added 13.
The Pirates (8-11, 3-7 NWC) jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter, and led by as much as 20-6. The Loggers never led in the first half, but they were undeterred. A pair of Prewitt free-throws cut the deficit to 26-24 just three minutes into the second quarter. Whitworth carried a 40-36 lead into halftime.
Consecutive baskets by Lange to start the second half evened the score, 40-40. Mara Henderson's 3-pointer gave Puget Sound its first lead of the game, 43-42, 2:15 into the third quarter.
The Pirates regained control midway through the fourth quarter when they took a 66-61 lead, but Lange and Prewitt brought the Loggers back. Lange hit a layup with 4:24 left in regulation, and one minute later Prewitt hit a layup to cut Whitworth's lead to 66-65.
Following another defensive stop, Lange went 1-for-2 at the line to tie the game. Yet another defensive stop led to a Prewitt jumper that gave Puget Sound a 68-66 edge with 1:59 on the clock, and the Loggers held on to the lead for the rest of the game.
The Loggers dominated on the boards, 42-28. The Loggers were also more efficient shooting the ball, posting a 44.3 field-goal percentage to Whitworth's 40.7 percent.
Puget Sound returns home to host Willamette, Friday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m.
