Puget Sound downed by Whitworth in three sets

Box Score

TACOMA, Washington – In a Northwest Conference match that was closer than the final score indicates, the Puget Sound volleyball team lost in three sets (25-21, 25-13, 25-18) against Whitworth in Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday night.

During the first set, Puget Sound (6-8, 1-1 NWC) was in an 18-12 hole against Whitworth (8-4, 2-0 NWC). However, consecutive kills by Jordan Holman and Melanie Siacotos sparked a comeback bid. The rally came to a head when a solo block by Cara Bolte cut the deficit to 20-19, but that's as close as the Loggers got.

Two sets later, Puget Sound jumped out to a 7-4 lead. The Pirates fought back to tie the score, 8-8, and then take a 13-9 lead of their own. A kill by Alyssa Wright followed by consecutive Sarah Blumenfeld aces highlighted a rally that tied up the third set, 14-14. But Whitworth closed out the match with an 11-4 run.

Puget Sound is on the road for the next three matches, starting at Willamette Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.
