Loggers suffer heartbreaking loss in overtime

Box Score

TACOMA, Washington – The Loggers trailed by 14 points early in the game, but it was an unlucky bounce in overtime that cost Puget Sound an 89-87 decision against Lewis & Clark in Memorial Fieldhouse Friday night.

The Loggers (10-13, 4-10 NWC) got off to a rough start and trailed the Pioneers (10-12, 6-7 NWC), 17-3, through the first nine minutes of the game. Still, Puget Sound remained resilient.

Down by five points late in the first half, CJ Geathers hit a corner 3-pointer to cut the Loggers' deficit to 27-25. Geathers stayed hot and hit a buzzer-beating trey to the game, 30-30, at halftime.

The Loggers opened the second half with a 9-0 run. Cal Hansen had a couple of buckets and Geathers connected from deep as Puget Sound claimed a 39-30 lead two minutes into the second half.

Lewis & Clark fought back to tie the game, 50-50, with 11:53 left in regulation.

The Loggers trailed, 77-75, with regulation winding down when Stellan Roberts pulled up for a jumper. Although he missed just before the buzzer, John Misel fought for the offensive board and drew a foul. With 0.5 seconds on the clock, Misel hit both free-throws to send the game into overtime.

Hansen connected on a pair of free-throws to give the Loggers an 87-85 lead with 1:02 left in overtime. The Pioneers answered with a game-tying basket, and then they forced the Loggers into a missed shot with 25 seconds left.

Lewis & Clark's ensuing possession appeared as though it would end in a turnover. There was a mad scramble for a loose ball, but the ball bounced directly to a Pioneer standing under the basket. The game-winning shot was laid in uncontested with 0.8 seconds left.

It was the Loggers' seventh game this season decided by three points or less. Puget Sound has a 2-5 record in those games.

Roberts had a career-high 33 points, surpassing his previous mark of 31. He also added nine rebounds and five assists against the Pioneers.

Hansen totaled 26 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Misel scored 10 points to go with eight rebounds.

The Loggers are back home to host Willamette Friday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m.
