WALLA WALLA, Washington – Backed by Cal Hansen's first double-double of the season, the Puget Sound men's basketball team beat Whitman, 61-59, for the first time in seven years Saturday night.

Puget Sound's last win against Whitman was during the Northwest Conference Tournament semifinals in Feb. 2014.

Hansen finished with season-highs in points (22) and rebounds (15). Grant Erickson added nine boards in the winning effort, and CJ Geathers came away with nine points and four steals.

The Loggers (1-3, 1-3 NWC) overcame a woeful performance from 3-point range, where Puget Sound shot just 1-for-18. Despite the misses, the Loggers turned the ball over only 10 times, compared to the Blues' 22 turnovers.

With the game tied 35-35 four minutes into the second half, AJ Chappelle hit a jumper that gave the Loggers a two-point advantage. From there, Puget Sound did not trail for the rest of the game.

Whitman (1-3, 1-3 NWC) evened the score, 45-45, midway through the second half. The Loggers responded when Paul Johnson pulled down an offensive board that led to a layup for Geathers.

Puget Sound's defense then forced the Blues into consecutive turnovers. Those miscues led to a made jumper by Tyrese Yussuf-Willis and a 3-pointer by Geathers to put the Loggers ahead, 52-45.

The Loggers held Whitman scoreless for the last two-and-a-half minutes of the game.

Puget Sound returns to Memorial Fieldhouse to host Pacific Lutheran Friday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m. Fans and family are not permitted to attend athletic events this year.
