TACOMA, Washington – A few days after breaking into the national rankings, the No. 19 Puget Sound women's soccer team aims to keep its undefeated season alive at Whitman and Whitworth this weekend (Oct. 16-17).
National recognition
United Soccer Coaches this week ranked Puget Sound No. 19 in the NCAA D-III Top-25 poll. The Loggers earned the recognition by beating No. 18 Pacific Lutheran and Lewis & Clark last week. The Lutes have since fallen out of the top-25.
Competing for perfection
With an 11-0-1 overall record (7-0-1 NWC), the 2021 Loggers are off to the best start to a season since the 2015 Puget Sound squad posted a 17-0-5 overall record (12-0-4 NWC).
Trio of Trouble
Radhika Webster Schultz,
Genny Jilka and
Kylee Roath are the highest scoring trio in the Northwest Conference. They each have five goals this season.
Nine for 12
Chaylea Tome has recorded nine shutouts through 12 games. She and the Logger defense have allowed only two goals this season.
Calling on Calkins
Through her first 43 career games as head coach for Puget Sound,
Kim Calkins and the Loggers have defeated three nationally-ranked teams. In 2019, Puget Sound topped No. 11 Trinity (Tex.). This fall, the Loggers have defeated No. 8 Wheaton (Ill.) and No. 18 Pacific Lutheran.
Scouting Whitman (0-10-1, 0-8 NWC)
Whitman has yet to record a win this season and it sits at the bottom of the NWC standings. The Blues have scored just three goals this season, two of which belong to
Scouting Whitworth (7-3-2, 4-2-2 NWC)
The Pirates enter the weekend with consecutive shutout wins against Pacific (3-0) and Linfield (2-0). The Pirates are the only team that Puget Sound has played and not defeated - the two teams reached a scoreless draw in Tacoma earlier this season (Sept. 19). Ten different Pirates have tallied a goal this season. Gabriella Coprivnicar leads the offense with five goals. Goalkeeper Kate Nelson has made 56 saves and holds a 0.64 goals-against average.
