TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound men's soccer team tied with Willamette, 2-2, on East Field Sunday afternoon.
Willamette (8-3-1, 6-2-1 NWC) got on the scoring sheet first in the 22
nd minute and rode that momentum into the half with a 1-0 lead.
In the 67
th minute, a clearance by the Bearcat defense resulted in a hand-ball in the box, giving the Loggers (5-5-3, 4-2-2 NWC) an opportunity from the penalty spot to tie the game.
Ryan Smith stepped up and recorded his fifth goal of the season, tying the match at one-all.
Eight minutes later,
Marko Babiak headed home his sixth goal of the season from
Graham Hall corner kick.Â
The Loggers fought off the Bearcats until the 87
th minute when Willamette equalized, forcing the match to head into overtime. Midway through the first OT, Babiak lined up for a free kick just outside the box. His bid on goal was saved by the Willamette keeper.
Puget Sound and Willamette were in a very physical match as a total of nine yellow cards were handed out, including both coaches.
The Loggers attempted 15 shots to go along with eight corner kicks for the match.
Puget Sound will be on the road next Saturday, Oct. 23, when it takes on third-placed Whitman (10-3, 6-3 NWC) at 2:30 p.m.
