TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound men's soccer team travels to eastern Washington to take on Whitman (Oct. 23) and Whitworth (Oct. 24). Both matches start at 2:30 pm.
Coming into their own
After starting the Northwest Conference slate with a 2-2-1 record, the Loggers are unbeaten in their last four conference contests. That stretch includes a 1-0 victory at first-place Pacific Lutheran (Oct. 8), and hard-fought tie against Willamette (Oct. 17).
Sawing the defense
Marko Babiak and
Ryan Smith have both scored a goal in each of the past two games. With their goals this past weekend, Babiak (6) and Smith (5) have proven to be the Loggers go-to combination up front. Two-time All-NWC selection
Cale Spence remains a constant threat, and he has four goals this season.
The math in Matheny
Forty-percent of
Andrew Matheny's starts in goal have resulted in a shutout - four shutouts in 10 starts. He has allowed just 11 goals in a little more than 906 minutes, which comes out to a 1.09 goals-against average.
Lucky number 15
The Loggers are at their best when the offense is aggressive. Puget Sound holds a 3-0-2 record when it attempts at least 15 shots in a game.
Scouting Whitman (10-3, 6-3 NWC)
The Blues enter the weekend having won four out of their last five games, outscoring their opponents 13-2 over that stretch. Whitman has one of the more versatile players in the conference in Oscar Harding, who is leading the Blues in both scoring (5) and assists (7). Puget Sound and Whitman last met on Sept. 26, with the Blues coming out on top, 2-1. The Loggers will look to get on the scoring sheet early as they were playing from behind for nearly the entire game last time out against Whitman
Scouting Whitworth (6-6-1, 5-4, NWC)
The Pirates have been a tale of two different teams. At home, Whitworth have yet to lose and it posts the best home record in the conference (5-0-1). On the road, the Pirates have struggled, coming in with a record of 1-6 away from Spokane. Whitworth has the conference's top leading scorers in Beckett Arthur (10), and Dominic Gusman (7) isn't too far behind. When the Loggers last matched up with the Pirates on Sept. 25, Puget Sound came out with the 1-0 win.
