Loggers can't keep pace with Pirates in latter half of each set

Box Score TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound volleyball team was able to keep it close in each set, but the Loggers ultimately lost to Whitworth in three sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-17) in Memorial Fieldhouse Friday night. Whitworth (18-2, 13-0 NWC) in unbeaten in the Northwest Conference, and it is receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll.
 
Pirates held a 10-8 lead in the first set, but a 3-0 Puget Sound (14-8, 8-5 NWC) run was capped off by a Jordan Holman kill to put the Loggers ahead, 11-10. The teams were knotted up, 15-15, but Puget Sound went on another 3-0 run to take an 18-15 edge. The run began with a kill by Makenzie Leith, and was followed by two Whitworth errors.
 
The Pirates eventually reclaimed the lead in the first set, though they never led by more than two points.
 
Whitworth carried that momentum into the second set, jumping out to an 8-3 lead. The Loggers fought back and went on a 5-0 run to take an 18-17 lead. The run featured kills by Holman, Logan Winn, and Maddie Klopcic. However, Whitworth immediately responded with a 6-0 run of its own to capture the set.
 
The Loggers kept pace with the Pirates early in the third set. A kill by Klopcic was followed by a Samantha Johnson ace and Whitworth error to cut the Pirates' lead to 8-7. From there, Whitworth went on a 7-2 run to take command of the set.
 
Puget Sound's final home match of the season is Saturday, Oct. 30, against Whitman. The Loggers celebrate their seniors starting at 6 p.m. in Memorial Fieldhouse.
