Women's basketball season-opening homestand continues this weekend

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound women's basketball team's season-opening home stretch continues this weekend when the Loggers host Multnomah Friday, Nov. 12, for a 5 p.m. tipoff. Puget Sound then welcomes Providence (Mont.) to Memorial Fieldhouse Sunday, Nov. 14, for a 2 p.m. start.
 
A split start
The Loggers began the season with a 65-58 loss against UC Santa Cruz (Nov. 5), but bounced back with a 72-54 win against Pomona-Pitzer (Nov. 7). After shooting 32.3-percent from the floor and turning the ball over 23 times in the season opener, Puget Sound improved those numbers to 40.9-percent and 18 turnovers in the win over the Sagehens.
 
Play so free, Sophie
Sophomore Sophie Nilsson is already playing as if she's a senior in midseason form. Through the first two games on the season, Nilsson is averaging 21 points and six rebounds while shooting 56.0-percent from the floor and 63.6-percent from 3-point range.
 
Stuffing the sheet
During the shortened 2020-21 season, Katie Minnehan led the Loggers in total assists, rebounds, and steals. After the first weekend of 2021-22, she leads Puget Sound in steals (11), and is tied with Nilsson for the team lead in rebounds (12). Minnehan is also tied with Sofia Lavinder as the Loggers' third-leading scorer.
 
Crashing the glass
The Loggers have 83 total rebounds this season, and each Puget Sound started picked up at least five rebounds against Pomona-Pitzer.
 
Scouting Multnomah (0-2)
The Lions are winless in their first two games of the season. They came up short against Northwest Conference members Willamette (73-66) and Lewis & Clark (76-70). Multnomah is shooting 32.6-percent from the floor following those two games, including 18.4-percent from 3-point range. Dalila Rincan is the team's leading scorer with 16.0 points per game. Shaila Mays averages 15.5 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds
 
Scouting Providence (Mont.) (6-1)
After dropping their first game of the season (Oct. 21), the Argos have rattled off six consecutive wins. Providence is averaging 72.4 points and 38.4 rebounds per game. Four players average double-digits in scoring, led by 16.0 points from Emilee Maldonado, and 14.6 points from Parker Esary. Esary also averages a team-high 7.3 rebounds.
