TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound women's basketball team got off to a slow start, but it ultimately outlasted Providence (Mont.), 75-67, in Memorial Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon.
Samantha Swartout flirted with a double-double by scoring 16 points and pulling down a game-high eight rebounds.
Sophie Nilsson scored 15 points, while
Sofia Lavinder,
Paige Gerhart, and
Kennedy Brown each netted 11.
The Loggers (3-1) played timid in the first quarter, and found themselves down 19-14 through the game's first 10 minutes. Puget Sound shot just 27.8-percent from the floor in the opening period.
However, the Loggers opened the second quarter in a different gear.
Georgia Lavinder began the period by hitting a 3-pointer, and the Logger defense promptly forced a turnover. From there, Gerhart made a layup to tie the game.
The Loggers closed out the first half with a 10-0 run to take a 34-31 lead into the break. Lavinder and Swartout both connected from deep during the run.
Providence kept the fight alive and took a 52-51 lead at the end of the third quarter, but Puget Sound maintained its intensity in the final period. The Loggers took a double-digit lead, 65-55, for the first time when
Isabella Reed knocked down a 3-pointer with 6:27 on the clock. That lead grew to 73-59 when Nilsson scored from the paint.
Puget Sound finished the game shooting 45.8-percent from the floor and 38.5-percent from beyond the arc.
The Loggers make their first road trip of the season when they had to California to take on Caltech Friday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m.
