TACOMA, Washington – Eight All-Northwest Conference selections, 18 consecutive games unbeaten, national rankings, NWC Coach of the Year, NWC Offensive Player of the Year, and an Academic All-American. The 2021 fall season proved that Puget Sound still has one of the most elite women's soccer programs in all of NCAA D-III.
Senior
Kylee Roath was named the NWC Offensive Player of the Year, and third-year head coach
Kim Calkins was named the NWC Coach of the Year. Roath led the Loggers in scoring with eight goals, six of which were game-winners. She earned All-NWC First Team for the second time in her collegiate career. Roath's illustrious career at Puget Sound began with a NWC Freshman of the Year honor in 2018.
Calkins led the Loggers to two wins against nationally-ranked teams this fall. The Loggers beat No. 8 Wheaton, 1-0 (Sept. 11), and less than a month later they stunned No. 18 Pacific Lutheran in overtime, 1-0 (Oct. 6).
Kalina Cordero connected with
Radhika Webster Schultz for the thrilling golden goal against PLU.
Genny Jilka scored the game-winner against the Thunder.
The win over the Lutes allowed Puget Sound to crack the national rankings for the first time in the season, coming in at No. 19 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Loggers achieved that same No. 19 national rank from D3soccer.com a couple weeks later.
Arguably, Puget Sound should have been nationally ranked earlier in the season. The Loggers held their first six opponents scoreless to start the year, posting a 5-0-1 record during that stretch. Puget Sound remained unbeaten through October, marking the program's longest such streak since 2015.
The 18-game unbeaten streak in 2021 would not have been possible without junior goalkeeper
Chaylea Tome. The streak featured 12 one-goal wins and 14 shutouts. By the end of Puget Sound's season, Tome led the nation in shutouts. She also led the NWC in save percentage (.929) and goals-against average (0.24).
Tome was named to the All-NWC First Team, as was defender
Jasmine Chapman. Midfielder
Tess Carden was placed on the All-NWC First Team – her third-career All-NWC selection. Webster Schultz was among the five Loggers to earn All-NWC First Team after she scored six goals this year.
Jilka totaled five goals – including three game-winners – to earn All-NWC Second Team.
Ava Cholakian led the Loggers in assists with five, earning herself a spot on the All-NWC Second Team for the second time in her Puget Sound career. Defender
Kalina Cordero earned her second-career All-NWC honor on the Second Team.
For Cordero and Tome, the honors were not only athletic. Both received Academic All-District Team from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Tome went on to be named an Academic All-American. She is the only Northwest Conference women's soccer student-athlete to receive Academic All-American this year.
