Box Score SPOKANE, Washington – Mussie Teclemariam recorded his first double-double with Puget Sound, but the Loggers lost at Whitworth, 79-70, Saturday night.
Teclemariam scored 14 points and pulled down a team-high 11 boards. Cal Hansen scored 15 points to go with eight boards, while Donovan Wilson added eight rebounds and six assists.
Will Mathews and Jourdan Joseph both scored in double figures off the bench. Mathews finished with a season-high 14 points, and Joseph netted 13.
Puget Sound opened the game with a 7-2 run in the first two minutes of the game. The run included a 3-pointer and two boards from Teclemariam.
Whitworth quickly countered by tying the game, 7-7, and the Pirates took a 36-34 lead into the break. Whitworth's lead reached double digits, 46-35, a little more than three minutes into the second half.
The Loggers kept the pressure on Whitworth and forced a couple of turnovers. Joseph and Paul Johnson made consecutive 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 46-43. From there, however, the Pirates scored the game's next six points.
Trailing 57-48, the Loggers made yet another strong run. Following a 3-pointer by Mathews and a layup from Teclemariam, Wilson drilled a trey to bring the Loggers to within 57-56. Still, the Loggers were unable to reclaim the lead.
Puget Sound returns to Memorial Fieldhouse to host Whitman, Feb. 19-20.
