Second half of NWC volleyball season begins in eastern Washington

TACOMA, Washington – The second half of the Northwest Conference volleyball season begins this weekend when the Loggers travel east for matches at Whitman (Oct. 14) and Whitworth (Oct. 15). The Loggers and Pirates enter this weekend tied for first place in the NWC standings (6-2).

Logan Winn was named the NWC Student-Athlete of the Week for offense after she totaled a career-high 48 assists during Puget Sound's five-set win over Pacific Lutheran in Memorial Fieldhouse (Oct. 5). Winn also received the same NWC honor following the Puget Sound Premiere (Sept. 2-3). She has 514 assists on the season, which leads the NWC.
 
Statement weekend

The Loggers began their NWC season by sweeping both Whitman and Whitworth (Sept. 16-17). It was Puget Sound's first 3-0 win over Whitworth since 2012. Avery Allemann was named the NWC Student-Athlete of the Week (offense) for her effort against the Whits, posting 10 kills in each match.

Katelyn Chekian is one of the top-two team leaders in several categories this season. She ranks second in kills (128), second in digs (165), and second in service aces (22). Chekian has seven double-doubles this season.
 
Killin' it
Avery Allemann leads the team in kills with 149, and she has a team-leading .278 attack percentage. Allemann is also crucial in Puget Sound's defensive efforts, as she has a team-high 66 blocks. She is the conference's No. 2 leader in blocks so far this season.
 
Freshman support
First-year Logger Akira Anderson ranks third on the team in digs (139), and she ranks third in service aces (18).
 
Scouting Whitman (6-10, 4-4 NWC)
The Blues enter this weekend with three consecutive wins, including 3-0 victories over Linfield and Lewis & Clark. Whitman is hitting .162 as a team, and allowing opponents to hit .157. Kenzie Martinez has a team-high 194 kills, and Nicole Kelly follows with 169. Defensively, London Sydney has 45 blocks on the year, while Jamie Bartok has 233 digs.
 
Scouting Whitworth (12-4, 6-2 NWC)
The Pirates went undefeated in conference play last year. Their first NWC loss of the 2022 season came against Puget Sound, but then Whitworth went on a five-game winning streak from there. However, the Pirates lost to Linfield in five sets in their most recent match (Oct. 8). Whitworth has the conference's leading attack with a .212 attack-percentage. Maddie Lees has a team-high 179 kills. Ella Jimenez (71) and Cassidy Franklin (60) are the team-leaders in blocks.
