Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Ruttledge hits clutch 3-pointers to upset No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, California – Liam Ruttledge hit a couple of clutch 3-pointers to propel the Puget Sound men's basketball team to a 79-77 win over No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer in the final day of the David Wells Classic Saturday afternoon. The Sagehens are nationally-ranked in the D3hoops.com preseason poll.

Puget Sound had its 3-point stroke going all night, and the Loggers rode that momentum from distance through the final buzzer.

The Loggers trailed, 65-62, when Charlie DeBoer tied the game by hitting a trey with 7:48 left in regulation. Ninety seconds later, Grant Erickson hit a 3-pointer to allow the Loggers to keep pace, 67-67.

A 3-pointer by Taj Phillips with 5:16 on the clock gave the Loggers a 70-69 lead, and Puget Sound reclaimed a one-point lead, 73-72, when DeBoer hit another 3-pointer just one minute later.

The Loggers found themselves in a two-point deficit, 75-73, with three minutes on the clock, but Ruttledge drilled a trey to give the Loggers yet another one-point lead. Puget Sound then came up with a big defensive stop, as Ruttledge came down with a rebound.

In the Loggers' ensuing possession, Ruttledge connected from deep once again, this time giving Puget Sound a two-possession lead, 79-75, with 1:14 remaining. It was just the buffer Puget Sound needed to seal the upset win.

Overall, Puget Sound shot 53.3-percent from beyond the arc (16-for-30). Ruttledge and DeBoer both scored 16 points, while Phillips added 15 points and six assists. Erickson came away with 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

The Loggers open Northwest Conference action at home against Whitman and Whitworth, Dec. 2-3.
