Loggers win for third time on California trip

CLAREMONT, California – Jacob Ota hit his third home run of the season, and Joe Schwab earned his second win as the Puget Sound baseball team completed a three-game southern California sweep with a 7-2 win at Claremont-M-S Sunday afternoon.

The Stags took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Logger offense came to life in the fourth. Dylan Joyce led off by reaching base on an error, and he moved into scoring position on a passed ball. A fly out by Ota allowed Joyce to move up another 90 feet, and Jonas Kim came through with an RBI single to tie the game.

Puget Sound put up three in the fifth inning. Kyle Strash led off with a walk, and Shane Himeda promptly followed with a single. Two batters later, Ota belted a three-run homer over the wall in left-centerfield.

Himeda finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate, pushing his batting average to .435 for the season.

Schwab pitched three innings in relief of starting pitcher Owen Shellhammer, allowing just one earned run on three hits.

The Loggers return home to host Lewis & Clark, April 2-3.
