TACOMA, Washington – With two wins against nationally-ranked teams under its belt, the Puget Sound women's soccer team begins its Northwest Conference season at home this weekend. The Loggers host Linfield Saturday, Sept. 17, and George Fox Sunday, Sept. 18. Both games kickoff in Baker Stadium at 12 p.m.
Â
Sinking the top-25
Puget Sound beat No. 22, 1-0, in Baker Stadium for the second game of the season.
Genny Jilka Maskarinec scored the game-winning goal in the first half, and
Chaylea Tome saved a penalty kick in the game's final 10 minutes. One week later, the Loggers topped No. 24 Pomoma-Pitzer, 2-0, in California.
Radhika Webster Schultz's first goal of the season was the game-winner, and
Leila Hausia-Haugen scored her first-career goal. Tome made seven saves against the Sagehens.
Â
Show-stopper
Chaylea Tome, who was an Academic All-American in 2021-22, leads the NWC in saves with 19.
Â
Back to her scoring ways
As a freshman in 2019,
Ava Cholakian scored six goals. Although she led the team in assists (5) last year, Cholakian scored just once in 2021. However, the Logger senior is already up to four goals before the 2022 NWC season begins. She netted a hat trick against Piedmont (Sept. 3), becoming the first Logger since 2018 to score three goals in a game.
Â
Pick your poison
After Cholakian's four-goal total so far this season, five Loggers have each netted a goal thus far:
Kalina Cordero,
Zoe Fowler,
Genny Jilka Maskarinec, and
Radhika Webster Schultz
Â
It's a set-up
Tess Carden and Layla Santo both have three assists this season. They are tied for first in the NWC.
Â
Scouting Linfield (2-1-1)
Six Wildcats have scored multiple goals this season, mostly thanks to their season-opening win over Multnomah, 11-1. Janae Lewis has a team-high three goals on the season. Linfield allows 1.25 goals per game, with Emilee Miller making all four starts in net.
Â
Scouting George Fox (3-0)
The undefeated Bruins have lopsided wins over Bushnell (7-0) and Multnomah (8-0). George Fox began its NWC slate with a 2-0 win at Pacific Wednsday this week. Maggie Phillips has scored 11 goals in three games, all of which came between the Bushnell and Multnomah games. The George Fox defense has allowed just six shots on goal in its three games.
