TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound volleyball team began the final day of the Puget Sound Premiere by getting swept by Pacific Lutheran, but the Loggers bounced back by sweeping Benedictine in Memorial Fieldhouse Saturday.
Puget Sound 0, Pacific Lutheran 1 (25-19, 28-26, 25-23)
Although the Loggers lost to the Lutes in three sets, the final two sets were closely contended. In the second set, a kill by Jenna Williams followed by a PLU error gave the Loggers a 17-12 edge. From there, however, the Lutes went on a 4-0 run to make it a one-point contest.
Consecutive kills by
Katelyn Chekian and
Hadley Haselden kept the Loggers ahead, 20-17, but PLU tied the set with three consecutive points. Another kill by Chekian, followed by a Lutes error, put Puget Sound on the verge of claiming the fourth set, 24-21.
PLU responded with another 3-0 run, and it outlasted the Loggers in the frame, 28-26.
Undeterred in the third set, Chekian served up consecutive aces, and an ensuing miscue by PLU put the Loggers ahead, 13-9. A 4-1 run by Puget Sound gave the Maroon & White an 18-12 lead, but the Lutes claimed momentum with 9-0 run to seal the match.
Chekian finished the contest with 13 kills and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Logan Winn assisted on 32 kills for Puget Sound.
Puget Sound 3, Benedictine 0 (25-17, 25-22, 26-24)
The Loggers bounced back to finish the Puget Sound Premiere by sweeping Benedictine.
Maddie Klopcic had a match-high 11 kills, and
Logan Winn posted at least 30 assists for her fourth consecutive contest (31).
Chloe Akiona-Bannan totaled a team-high 13 digs, while
Katelyn Chekian and
Akira Anderson added 10, each.
The Eagles were on the verge of winning the second set when they held a 22-20 lead. But Benedictine committed three miscues while
Hadley Haselden and Jenna Williams put away kills to close out the set with a 5-0 run.
The Loggers held a 20-18 lead in the third set, but the Eagles weren't going away quietly. Benedictine went on a 3-0 run to take a one-point lead, but a kill from
Avery Allemann tied it up.
The teams were knotted, up, 24-24, when the Eagles committed an error and
Sara Olsson finished the match with a kill.
The Loggers travel to Southern California for four matches, Sept. 9-10.
