Women's soccer heads east to take on the Whits

TACOMA, Washington – With three shutout victories in its first four Northwest Conference games, the Puget Sound women's soccer team travels east for contests at Whitworth (Oct. 1) and Whitman (Oct. 2). Both games kickoff at 12 p.m.
 
Keeping strong
Chaylea Tome was named the NWC Student-Athlete of the Week (defense) following the Loggers' 1-0 wins over Pacific Lutheran (Sept. 22) and Lewis & Clark (Sept. 24). She made five saves against the Lutes, and six more against the Pioneers. By the end of last weekend, Tome was tied for No. 3 in the nation for the most shutouts this season (6).
 
Lucky number seven
Ava Cholakian scored the game-winning goal at Lewis & Clark, marking her seventh goal of the season. That total is Cholakian's new career-high for a single season. She netted six goals during her freshman campaign in 2019. Cholakian enters this weekend as the conference's second-leading scorer in 2022.
 
Setting the table
Layla Santos is tied for the conference lead in assists with four. Santos is thriving as a fifth-year senior after battling injuries for several years. She was unable to take the field 2019 through 2021, and she played in just five games in 2018.
 
Cordero's first
Fifth-year senior defender Kalina Cordero netted her first-career goal this year. She scored in the season-opening 5-0 win over Piedmont at home (Sept. 3). Cordero is a two-time All-NWC recipient (2019, 2021).
 
Representing the NWC

The Loggers are ranked No. 4 in the region in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll. Puget Sound is the top-ranked NWC team in the region.
 
Scouting Whitworth (1-4-2, 1-2-1 NWC)
The Pirates began their NWC season with a 1-0 win over Willamette (Sept 17), but Whitworth is winless in its last three games. The Pirates have scored only four goals through their seven games, half of which are off the foot of Kalena Pfaeltzer. Four goalies have combined for a 1.38 GAA.
 
Scouting Whitman (4-3, 1-3 NWC)

The Blues have totaled eight goals this season, and Lindsey Honhart accounts for half of them. After a 3-0 start to the year (non-conference), Whitman his 1-3 against its first four NWC opponents. The stretch includes shutout losses against Lewis & Clark and Willamette, and a 6-1 loss to George Fox. Whitman be Pacific, 3-1. Three Blues goals have a combined 1.71 GAA.
