Loggers head to California for four matches against SCIAC teams

TACOMA, Washington – After starting the 2022 season with a 3-1 record in Memorial Fieldhouse, the Puget Sound volleyball team heads to southern California for the La Verne/Whittier Invitational (Sept. 9-10).

The opponents
Puget Sound will take on Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne Friday, followed by Chapman and Whittier Saturday. All four teams are members of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). Puget Sound posted a 3-1 record in this same event last year, earning wins over Chapman, Whittier, and La Verne. The one loss was against Pomona-Pitzer.

Winn, Winn, Winn no matter what
Logan Winn was named the co-MVP of the Puget Sound Premiere (Sept. 2-3), and she was also named the Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week (offense). Winn totaled at least 31 assists in each of the Loggers' four matches during the season-opening weekend.

An exceptionally efficient start
Puget Sound posted a minimum .220 attack percentage in three of the first four matches of the season. The last time the Loggers had such a start offensively was back in 2013. That squad finished with a 17-8 overall record, and went 12-4 in the NWC.

Pick your poison
Three Loggers put away at least 30 kills during the season-opening weekend. Jena Williams led the way with 38, followed by Avery Allemann (37) and Maddie Klopcic (31). Katelyn Chekian has 26 kills to her name.

Fresh help
Logger freshman Akira Anderson played in 14 sets during the Puget Sound Premiere, totaling 36 digs during her first taste of NCAA volleyball. Fellow freshman Hadley Haselden also played in all 14 sets, totaling 23 kills. Haselden hit .286 in both of Puget Sound's wins against Benedictine.

Looking ahead
The NWC season starts at home, Sept. 17-18, against Whitman and Whitworth.
