TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound Loggers staged a remarkable comeback, rallying from an initial first-set loss to secure a 3-1 victory against Lewis and Clark College on Friday night. The set scores were 21-25, 25-23, 25-16, and 25-20.
The Loggers (7-5) struggled to find their rhythm against the Lewis and Clark Pioneers (1-10) resulting in six lead changes and multiple errors by Puget Sound. The Pioneers managed 10 kills with a .159 hitting rate, while Puget Sound posted a .105 hitting percentage.
Facing a 1-0 deficit, Coach Mark Massey saw a chance to mix it up in the next set, starting four freshman who hadn't seen much playing time yet. These newcomers displayed remarkable tenacity, with freshman
Viviann Garcia and sophomore transfer
Erin Fagan both recording a .667 hitting percentage, and senior
Sara Olsson dominating with seven kills at an impressive .875 hitting rate. After a successful second set, Massey continued with the freshman for the remainder of the match.
The third set was dominated by the Loggers as they maintained the lead with 11 kills and three service aces. Olsson added another five kills to the board.
The Loggers retained control in the fourth set, notching 17 kills at a .313 hitting rate to seal the match.
Olsson led the Loggers with 20 kills at a .333 hitting rate, while
Akira Anderson contributed 21 digs followed by
Samantha Keightley who recorded 16 digs. The Loggers totaled 53 kills compared to the Pioneers' 38 kills. Freshman
Randi Rush delivered 36 assists. The match saw 16 errors from each team, with eight ball handling errors from the Pioneers and five from the Loggers. Garcia recorded an impressive .333 hitting percentage, and Fagan secured 12 kills on a .303 hitting percentage.
The Loggers will be back here in Memorial Fieldhouse to face the Whitworth University Pirates next Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 is senior night so be sure to turnout at 6 p.m. in Memorial Fieldhouse to celebrate six graduating seniors.
