Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – Locked in a tight 2-2 battle in the 85
th minute, the Puget Sound women's soccer team suffered a shocking 3-2 loss to the Willamette University Bearcats on Saturday afternoon at East Field. The Loggers started the game with a promising early goal, but found themselves unable to maintain their lead, ultimately succumbing to the relentless pressure of the Bearcats.
In the 12
th minute,
Zoe Fowler positioned herself perfectly for a goal about 30 yards out.
Zoe Witter sent it forward allowing Fowler to skillfully shoot the ball over the goalie and into the back left corner of the net. The Bearcats weren't able to equalize until the 36
th minute in which Braeden Glaser chipped the ball to Ella McComas who shot it into the left goal post and ricocheted into the Loggers' goal.
Just three minutes into the second half,
Kya Scott positioned herself strategically at the top of the goal box for the throw in,
Zoe Fowler received the pass and drove it to the center where Scott calmly knocked it into the right side of the goal, untouched.
The Loggers glory was short-lived, as the Bearcats leveled the score less than five minutes later in the 53
rd minute. Despite their best efforts, the Loggers couldn't regain the control required to secure the lead and instead found themselves in trouble. Erin Denney made a crucial play guiding the ball past
Sienna Kloss and scoring on the opposite side of the net, just past
Gianna Maldonado's finger tips, ultimately giving the Bearcats the lead in the last five minutes of play.
The Loggers showcased a strong defense only allowing six shots on goal, three of which were crucial saves by Maldonado. While the Loggers were allowed eight shots on goal, with six saves by Sabella Pisicoli.
