TACOMA, Wash. – Puget Sound honored 15 senior players on Saturday afternoon before the start of the crosstown matchup against Pacific Lutheran University at Baker Stadium. Once the game got underway all eyes were on senior wide receiver
Izaiah Jerenz who was leading the nation in receptions per game. Jerenz has been the favorite target of quarterback
Mason Binning who was ranked #2 in the nation for completions per game. The Loggers looked to showcase this duo throughout the game, but the team fell short falling to the Lutes by a final score of 42-7.
In their first drive of the game, the Loggers quickly moved the ball down the field from Binning's four completed passes to PLU's 35 yard line. The drive was cut short off a fumble that was recovered by PLU. The Lutes capitalized on the miscue for its first touchdown of the game. Taking the next possession, Puget Sound once again looked like they were starting to get the pass game going but were unable to pick up a first down. After possession exchanges going into the second quarter, the Loggers once again got into PLU territory off of two runs by
Henry Hernandez for 25 yards along with completed receptions by Jerenz. On fourth down at PLU's 30 yard line, quarterback Binning was unable to escape being sacked to stop the drive. Once again, PLU was able to take advantage, scoring on its next possession moving the lead to 0-14. The score held the remainder of the quarter, after the Logger defense came up with a big stop on a fourth down with the ball on the Puget Sound 39 yard line.
Receiving the ball coming out of halftime, PLU was able to get down the field quickly for its third touchdown, now leading by 21. With less than two minutes off the clock on Puget Sound's possession, PLU once again found the end zone for its fourth touchdown of the afternoon. Puget Sound appeared to get on the scoreboard with its first touchdown of the game when Binning connected with a receiver before the play was called back because of an inadvertent whistle by an official. Maintaining possession to start the fourth quarter, Binning completed three more passes moving the ball to PLUs two-yard line. Hernandez then punched through the line for a two yard touchdown run to get the Loggers on the scoreboard. Kicker Ian Cameron's extra point conversion moved the score to 28-7.
Down by 21 points, Puget Sound attempted an onside kick, but PLU came up with the possession. PLU just needed one play to pad its lead. The Lutes were able to add on one more touchdown before the game ended with a final score of 42-7. Binning completed 34-of-47 passes for 245 yards. Jerenz added another 18 receptions to his impressive total for the year. As a team, Puget Sound was able to complete 3-5 fourth down conversions but pressure by the PLU defense proved challenging. Defensively,
Amarian Culpepper was credited with nine total tackles with teammate
Asher Matsui with seven for the game.
The Loggers finished the year with a 3-6 record and 2-5 in Northwest Conference play. Puget Sound will be looking for Binning to again lead the Loggers in 2024 with a lot of growth and depth in key positions anticipated, as well as the return of several starters coming off of injuries in the season. Puget Sound will open with Lewis & Clark as part of the Northwest Scholars Series between the two schools.
