Men's basketball victorious in regular season home-opener

TACOMA, Wash. – Four Loggers score in double-digits to lead Puget Sound to a 90-86 victory over the LeTourneau University Yellowjackets on Monday night in Memorial Fieldhouse.

Liam Ruttledge led the scoring with 18 points, followed by Grant Erickson with 14 points. The Loggers shot for 49.3% from the floor. Dezman Baker contributed 12 points while Will Mathews had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Taj Phillips led with eight assists and five rebounds.

The Loggers dominated the first half with a full-court press defense that led to multiple turnovers from the Yellowjackets. Mathews started the scoring with consecutive three-point shots to take the lead 8-2, and continued to extend that lead to 34-20 at eight minutes left in the half. The Loggers finished the half up by 10, the bench contributing almost half the points adding 23 to the score. Freshman Zane Miller put up eight points alone from the bench.

A few plays into the second half the Yellowjackets started to break the full-court press, making a few fast break plays before the Loggers adjusted to maintain a strong defense to the finish. The Loggers locked down on the Yellowjackets main shooter Caedmon Liebengood who managed 53% of their points in the first half. The Loggers struggled to find rhythm on the outside but worked the inside game well scoring 32-of-41 points scored in the second half. The Yellowjackets outscored the Loggers 47-41, but it was not enough to break the lead the Loggers had from the first half.

Men's basketball says goodbye for the Thanksgiving Holiday and will return on the road in Oregon at George Fox University on Dec. 2.
