Volleyball closes out the 2023 regular season in a 3-1 loss to Pacific

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Puget Sound volleyball team fell to the Pacific University Boxers 3-1 in their last regular-season Northwest Conference match on Saturday afternoon, with set scores of 25-22, 19-25, 25-27, and 26-28.

The Loggers recorded a total of 52 kills, 11 blocks, and 73 digs. Katelyn Chekian led the Loggers with 13 kills, 16 digs, and two aces. Sarah Johnsen followed with 11 kills on a .212 hitting rate and eight blocks. On the defensive side, Samantha Keightley boasted 21 digs, Mia Fedota contributed seven blocks and nine kills at a .304 hitting rate, while Logan Winn delivered 40 assists. 

In the first set, the two teams were competitively matched going point for point with Puget Sound holding the lead most of the way. The greatest lead was at 22-18 for the Loggers, however the Boxers recorded a four-point run that tied the score at 22-22. The Loggers finished the set with a kill and a service ace, taking a 1-0 lead.

The next set was dominated by the Boxers, but followed a similar pattern to the previous set moving point for point. It wasn't until the last five serves that the Pacific Boxers extended their lead to the final point with two kills and three Logger errors, tying it up 1-1.

The third set saw an early 7-3 lead from the Boxers and saw 15 tie scores taking them past 25-25, but consecutive kills from Alison Brown secured the win. 

The fourth set saw a 7-3 lead early for the Boxers, but the Loggers quickly responded with three kills and a service ace to regain the lead. This was followed by a five-point run for the Loggers and a five-point run for the Boxers. This set saw 12 tie scores and eight lead changes. The Loggers hit 25 points first, but a kill and service ace from Brown gave the Boxers the final win. 

The Loggers finished out their regular season 14-10 overall, and 7-9 in the NW Conference.
