Box Score 2 TACOMA, Washington – Savanna Smith hit her first home run of the season, but the Puget Sound softball team suffered a heartbreaking walk-off loss at La Verne Friday.
La Verne 11, Puget Sound 3
The Loggers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but La Verne won the first game of the doubleheader, 11-3.
Hailee Ueyama hit a one-out single in the first inning, and she moved into scoring position with a steal. After
Jessica Moore walked,
Mikayla Johnson delivered an RBI single.
Brenna Flannery came in as a pinch runner. She stole second base, and forced a throwing error by the catcher that allowed Moore to score. Flannery later came in to score on a sac fly by
Kendall Gantz.
La Verne 8, Puget Sound 7
Puget Sound held a 7-5 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but La Verne rallied for the walk-off win.
The Loggers and Leopards entered the seventh inning in 5-5 game, but
Hope Fleischman led off the top of the seventh inning with a single, and Smith immediately followed with a go-ahead two-run jack to left field.
The Leopards loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh. A single and fielder's choice tied the game, but La Verne was down to one out after a strikeout. The Leopards ultimately walked off on an infield single.
The Loggers were in a 2-0 hole entering the third inning, but that's when they rallied for five runs.
Hailee Ueyama led off with a bunt single, and
Jazzy Allen followed by drawing a walk.
Jessica Moore drove Ueyama home with a double, and then
Mikayla Johnson delivered a two-run double to give the Loggers a 3-2 lead. Fleischman kept the heat on with a base hit, and Smith followed with an RBI single. An error by the Leopards later in the inning accounted for the Loggers' fifth run.
The Loggers outhit La Verne, 15-11. Ueyama,
Jessica Moore, and Smith each picked up three hits. Johnson, Fleischman, and
Emily Moore each finished with two hits.
Puget Sound's road trip concludes with a doubleheader at Occidental Saturday, Feb. 18.
