TACOMA, Washington – Jack McCullar hit his first home run of the season and the Puget Sound baseball team got outstanding efforts from its starting pitchers as the Loggers split a doubleheader at home in the first Northwest Conference games of the season Saturday.

Puget Sound 2, Whitman 6
Davis Franklin allowed only two earned runs and struck out eight in his seven-inning start, but a couple of home runs allowed the Blues to win the first game Saturday, 6-2.

The Blues took a 1-0 lead thanks to a defensive miscue bu the Loggers in the first inning, and it came a 3-0 score following a two-run homer in the third inning.

Puget Sound got in the board in the seventh inning when
Nathan Blocher led off with a double, and then came in to score on a single by
Jack McCullar.
Makana Murashige accounted for the Loggers' second run when he singled home
Dylan Joyce in the eighth inning.

Cody Hirano, Murashige, and McCullar each finished with two hits.

Puget Sound 7, Whitman 4
Jack McCullar hit a solo home in the seventh inning, and
Gabe Huante hit a two-run double as the Loggers picked up their first home win and first conference win of the season.

The Loggers struck first in the first inning when an RBI single by
Makana Murashige gave Puget Sound a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning,
Sean Murphy hit a one-out single and
Gio Parascondola drew a walk. Huante stepped to the plate with outs, and he crushed an offering to the deepest part of the park in straight-away centerfield. The double cushioned the Loggers' lead to 3-0.

The Loggers held 7-1 lead entering the ninth inning, but the Blues pushed three runs across the plate.
Erik Bell came out of the bullpen before the Loggers could record an out in the ninth, and he locked his first save of the season by striking out three batters.

Brett Harvey improved to 3-0 after throwing five shutout innings. Although he walked six, Harvey allowed just three hits and struck out four.

Dylan Joyce, Marashige, and McCullar each collected two hits.

The series rubber match is Sunday, Feb. 19, at 12 p.m.
