Franklin goes the distance, Joyce and Huante homer during wins at Whitworth

TACOMA, Washington – Davis Franklin threw his first-career complete game, and Dylan Joyce and Gabe Huante both homered as the Puget Sound baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader at Whitworth Saturday.

Puget Sound 8, Whitworth 1
Davis Franklin faced only 33 batters through nine innings to earn his eighth win of the season. He allowed seven hits, a walk, and struck out seven.

An RBI groundout by Gabe Huante in the fourth gave Puget Sound a 1-0 lead, but the Loggers erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning.

Cody Hirano led off with a single, Drew Kamihara drew a walk, and Dylan Joyce followed with an RBI single to center. Makana Murashige followed Joyce's example and hit his own RBI single to push the lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Huante loaded the bases with a base hit, and Nate Blocher took advantage with an RBI single.

Following a Whitworth pitching change, Zach Robman drew a bases-loaded walk, and then William Gross ripped a three-run double down the left-field line.

Gross finished with his second three-hit game of the season, and he was one of six Loggers with multiple hits in the game.

Puget Sound 6, Whitworth 5

Dylan Joyce's 12th home run of the season – and the 37th of his career – was a two-run shot that gave the Loggers a 2-1 lead in the third inning.

The following frame, Huante belted a solo home run – his second of the season – to increase the lead to 3-1. Sean Murphy drove in a run with a base hit later in the fourth inning.

Whitworth tied the game, 4-4, with a three-run seventh inning, but the Loggers were quick to respond.

Makana Murashige led off the eighth inning with a walk, and Huante followed with a single. Following a sac bunt by Nathan Blocher, Davis Franklin roped a two-run double down the left-field line.

Joe Schwab closed out the game for his third save of the season. Starter Brett Harvey earned the win after pitching 6.1 innings. He improved to 5-0 on the season.

The Loggers and Pirates conclude their series with a game Sunday, April 16, starting at 11 a.m.
