TACOMA, Wash. – In a roller-coaster contest that saw back and forth lead changes throughout the game, the Puget Sound Loggers came away with the exciting 42-38 victory over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers as part of the Northwest Scholars Series.
The game was an offensive shootout from both teams, with the Pioneers accumulating 461 yards of total offense compared to the Loggers' 438 yards. Each team had 20 and 21 first downs respectively.
In the first half, Puget Sound took an early lead with a 50-yard rush from
Henry Hernandez, but Lewis & Clark got on the board with an 18-yard pass from quarterback Cruz Montana to Ben Burnham. Each team put up another score in the second quarter to go into the locker room at halftime tied up, 14-14.
The third quarter was dominated by Lewis & Clark, adding 17 points to their side of the scoreboard. But Puget Sound struck back with quarterback
Mason Binning connecting with
Izaiah Jerenz for a 54-yard touchdown to end the third quarter down by 10.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair with the Logger quickly scoring off a 40 yard run by Binning only to have Lewis & Clark hit back to return the lead to 10. Puget Sound then went to score twice with Binning connecting with Jerenz followed by another passing touchdown for 27 yards to
Joe Gallagher. The Loggers defense held strong with neither team adding to their scores the last seven minutes to give Puget Sound the 42-38 win.
Logger quarterback,
Mason Binning had an impressive start to the season - passing for three touchdowns and running in two on his own. Binning completed 23 of 36 passes for 258 yards. Gallagher ended the game with 11 total receptions for 103 yards, while Jerenz gained 100 yards on four receptions. Hernandez led the Loggers in rushing with 74 yards. Defensively,
Amarian Culpepper led the team in tackles with 11, followed by
Mason Bridges with 10.
The Loggers remain at home next Saturday, to take on Lewis & Clark Valley College in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
