TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound women's basketball team had five players reach double figures in scoring, while
Katie Minnehan pushed for a triple double with her first double-double of the season in the 70-62 loss to Willamette University on Friday night in Memorial Fieldhouse.
Paige Gerhart led the scoring with 13 points and eight rebounds, followed by Minnehan with 12 points, going 5-of-9 from the floor, adding 12 rebounds, 9 of which were offensive, six steals, four assists and a block.
Jordyn Reverman finished with 12 points,
Kennedy Brown buried 11 points, and
Sophie Nilsson returned to the court with 10 points.
The scoring started fairly even with the Loggers leading by at most six in the first quarter, but quickly took a hit when the Willamette Bearcats went on a 9-point run heading into the second quarter leading 17-13. The second quarter played out in a similar fashion with the Loggers tightening the score back up to about a 3-point difference and then the Bearcats drove for an 11-point push that ended the half with the Bearcats leading 38-29.
The Loggers outshot the Bearcats 21-17 in the third quarter with Minnehan scoring consecutive two pointers and finishing the quarter with eight points and eight boards, however the Loggers were never able to take the lead back. Puget Sound got within four points in the fourth, but never any closer.
The Bearcats had 21 turnovers to the Loggers 16, which allotted for 26 points. However, Willamette's shooting percentage was much higher at 52.9%, while the Loggers succumbed to a 31.4% shooting rate from the floor.
The Loggers play at home again tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 13 at 4 p.m. to take on Lewis and Clark College in Memorial Fieldhouse.
