SPOKANE, Wash. – Paige Gerhart delivered another double-double scoring 12 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists in the overtime win against Whitworth University on Sunday afternoon, 66-59.
Katie Minnehan dropped a game-high 12 rebounds, eight steals, and four assists, while
Sophie Nilsson dropped 10 points, five boards, two steals and a block in the win. The Loggers scored 39 points off the bench compared to the Pirates eight points. The Loggers posted 20 points from Pirate turnovers.
The Whitworth Pirates started hot with a 9-point run that lasted more than five minutes meanwhile the Loggers missed four shots. The Pirates outshot the Logers 15-8 in the first period.
The Loggers struggled to make a comeback falling to 15 points behind with 5:42 left until halftime. Moments later Gerhart stepped up and made a layup to start a 12-point run for the Loggers, followed by four points from
Sarah Skaggs and adding four more points from the bench. The Loggers made a quick jumper from
Natalia Sefair-Lopez that pushed to a 30-30 tie with the Pirates to end the first half.
The Pirates dominated the third period chipping away an 11 point lead for themselves. The Loggers responded in the fourth reducing the deficit to one point with 5:00 left in regulation. Then there were two minutes of dead play, the Pirates were unable to score anything from the floor in the fourth period. The Pirates only scored four free throws as the Loggers caught up, scoring 15, Nilsson scored the last points of regulation, a layup with 1:25 left on the clock. The Pirates had a crucial possession with seconds left that was blocked and rebounded by
Sophie Nilsson to finish regulation in a tie.
In the five minute overtime the Loggers managed the first four critical points, the Pirates could not score, shooting 0-of-6, the Loggers managed a 3-point jumper and a layup adding four free throws and the win.
The Loggers return to Tacoma to visit Pacific Lutheran University on Wednesday, January 24, the women play at 6 p.m.
