TACOMA, Washington (November 2, 2024) - Logger Football, led by quarterback Mason Binning's 326 total yards and three touchdowns, took their first conference win on a dodgy Peyton Field.
The conditions were a competitive advantage, but also a slight thorn in the side for the Loggers on a few key downs late in certain drives, causing 3rd-and-outs after a couple of slips. However, these few slip-ups were naught in comparison to the success found throughout the rest of the game. Offensive lineman Caleb Puapuaga frequently imposed his will upon the defensive line, causing frustration across the board. Judging by the box score, it looks like Henry Hernandez was somewhat limited by the Willamette defensive front, kept to only 122 yards - but he actually averaged 7.2 yards per carry. Tommy Milton was the reception leader for the Loggers, a first in his career, with 12 catches, 135 yards, and one touchdown.
Head Coach Jeff Thomas was excited to see that the Loggers are taking strides in the right direction, especially compared to weeks' past. "It's always good to get a conference win," he said. "Credit to Willamette for continuing to battle. We need to do a better job of finishing off an opponent when we get the opportunity, and we're definitely going improve as a result of this game."
The Puget Sound defense also had reason to smile. Amarian Culpepper picked off the Willamette quarterback for a 23 yard touchdown to grant Puget Sound some more breathing room in the second quarter. Culpepper and Max Arneclev topped the Logger's defensive stat sheet with four solo and five solo tackles, respectively, holding the Bearcats to 372 total yards - where the Loggers finished with 502.
The Loggers look to continue this success in the last two games of the season. Their next and final home game of 2024 will be next Saturday, November 9th, versus Lewis & Clark College. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm in Baker Stadium.
