Women's Basketball falters finish in 67-60 loss to Whitman College

Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound women's basketball team battled to the end for a close game, but ultimately fell against Whitman College, 67-60 in Memorial Fieldhouse on Friday night. 

The game saw 11 lead changes and five tied scores. The Whitman Blues jumped out to a 12-6 lead, but the Puget Sound Loggers quickly fired back with a 3-point play by Paige Gerhart and a pair of jumpers from Sarah Skaggs and Katie Minnehan. Halfway through the second period the Loggers found themselves falling behind shooting 1-of-6 from beyond the arc, while the Blues were shooting for 46.2% from the field. Whitman finished the first half leading 32-25. 

In the third period, the Loggers took back the power, opening the second half with consecutive three-pointers from Gerhart, it was neck and neck as the Loggers would tie it up 36-36 with 6:40 left. The Loggers outshot the Blues 18-10 in the third period, although it was statistically there worst period shooting for 31.6% from the floor. Whitman would stay close as they chipped away at the Loggers, taking the lead back at the start of the fourth period. The Loggers shots weren't falling how the team was expecting, but they managed to hold on with a tie score, 58-58 at 1:44 left in regulation. 

The Blues would bury a double followed by a few free-throws to take a 65-58 lead that the Loggers couldn't unbury. Minnehan scored a final jumper for the Loggers with 13 seconds remaining to make it 65-60, but it wasn't enough in the loss. The Loggers would shoot for 19.2% from three-point range, the Loggers shot the best in the first period foing for 40% from the field. 

The Loggers scored 26 points off the bench while Paige Gerhart led the scoring with 19 points going 4-of-7 for 57.1% from three-point range adding seven rebounds and four steals in the loss. Katie Minnehan followed with 13 points going 6-for-9 from the floor plus seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Loggers finish out their regular season against Whitworth University tomorrow, February 17th at 4 p.m. in Memorial Fieldhouse. The Loggers will honor six seniors on their accomplishments in athletics at the University of Puget Sound.
