Brown breaks 1,000 career points in regular season finale win against Whitworth University, 84-54

TACOMA, Wash. – Kennedy Brown scores 14 to surpass 1,000 career points as a Logger in an 84-54 dominant win against Whitworth University in Memorial Fieldhouse. For a team with seven freshmen and six graduating seniors, the Loggers coach Casey Kushiyama integrated playing time for each athlete allowing everyone on the team to score this season. The University of Puget Sound, fans, and families honored six graduating seniors, Kennedy Brown, Paige Gerhart, Katie Minnehan, Sophie Nilsson, Grace Pytynia-Hillier, and Jordyn Reverman for their athletic achievements as Loggers on Saturday.

After securing the victory, the Loggers, ranked fourth, are set to compete against Willamette University, the top seed at the Northwest Conference Championships scheduled for Friday, February 23rd, at 8 p.m. on the Willamette University Campus in Salem, Oregon.

Reverman led the Loggers scoring a game-high 20 points with 11 points scored in the third period alone, adding four rebounds in the win. Brown went 6-for-10 from the floor, while Gerhart put down 13 points at a 50% rate adding seven rebounds and six assists. The Loggers scored 47 points off the bench and 22 points off turnovers. The Whitworth Pirates only managed nine points off turnovers and 14 points off the bench.

The game started with a tribute to Pytynia-Hillier as her season was cut short due to an injury at home against Linfield University. Pytynia-Hillier started her last game as a Logger and scored one final basket as a graduating senior before she was taken out of the game to cheer on her team safely on the sidelines.

In the first period, Puget Sound burst out to an 11-0 run led by Gerhart and Brown and continued to propel the Loggers to a 76.5% shooting rate that ended in a 30-12 lead. The Loggers were 3-6 from beyond the arc and 10-11 from inside.

Nilsson opened the scoring in the second period with a jumper and closed out the period with a three-pointer, holding a 50-25 lead going into the second half. The Pirates had 13 turnovers in the first half, while the Loggers only had five.

The Loggers reached their biggest lead of the game in the third period after they opened with an 8-0 run led by consecutive plays from Reverman, 58-25 with 7:42 left. The Pirates best scoring run was just six points, back-to-back three-pointers from Zalissa Sanfo and Dawson Driggs, but the Loggers continued to maintain a 20+ lead until the end. Overall, the Loggers shot for 52.5%, while the Pirates succumbed to a 30.5% shooting percentage.
