NEWBERG, Ore. – In the second day of the series versus George Fox, the Loggers came away with a split in the doubleheader falling in the first game 9-1, but taking the win in the final game 9-8.
Hope Fleischman scored her second homerun, while
Mikayla Johnson score in her third homer of the series. Puget Sound stands at 4-4 in the early part of Northwest Conference play and 6-9 overall.
Game 1: Puget Sound 1, George Fox 9
The Bruins jumped out early in the game with three runs in the first inning. After going scoreless in the first three innings, the Loggers put up its only run of the game in the fourth inning when freshman
Claire Besancon singled to left center to bring home
Mikayla Johnson.
Puget Sound was able to get two more on base in the inning, but were unable to add to the score. George Fox added to its lead with a home run in the bottom of the fourth and added five more runs in the fifth inning off of six hits, ending the game with the win.
Puget Sound finished with four hits and
Alison Madia took the loss from the circle.
Game 2: Puget Sound 9, George Fox 8
In game two, Puget Sound found its rhythm at the plate early, converting a five-hit inning into a four-run lead.
Mikayla Johnson picked up the first RBI, scoring
Jazzy Allen from second. After scoring with an unearned run, senior
Hope Fleischman brought in the third run off a single to left field. Another RBI single by
Nyomi Estrada added the final run to the scoreboard for the inning.
George Fox responded with a single run in the bottom of the first, but Puget Sound created more scoring opportunities in the second inning to extend its lead. Once again it was Besancon and Johnson picking up RBIs to bring the score to 6-1. The Bruins answered with two runs of its own ending the second inning with a score of 6-3 in favor of the Loggers.
The game stayed tight through the middle innings with both teams adding to its score. For Puget Sound, Fleischman homered in the third with the bases empty and Johnson did the same in the fifth. Meanwhile, the Bruins added two more runs to bring the score to Puget Sound 8, George Fox 7 going into the sixth inning.
After going three and out in the top of the sixth, the Loggers gave up the tying run to the Bruins in the bottom of the inning. However, Puget Sound continued to battle with three runners on base off of two singles and a walk, Fleischman popped it up to left field for the sacrifice fly bringing Besancon over the plate for the go-ahead run.
