Game Recap: Baseball |

Logger baseball rips through Whitworth University with double win

TACOMA, Wash. – Brett Harvey pitched nine innings for 11 strikeouts and one earned run as the Puget Sound baseball team delivered consecutive wins, 2-1 and 6-2 against Whitworth University on Friday afternoon.

Game 1:  Puget Sound 2, Whitworth University 1

Senior Davis Franklin pitched eight strikeouts in six innings, but it was Zack Robman who entered in the top of the 8th inning to take the win on the mound for the Loggers.

Franklin would walk his first batter, but continue on to strikeout the next three batters. On offense, Puget Sound  faced challenges scoring in the first inning, with two strikeouts, managed to advance a runner to third base after an error by the first baseman, the Loggers wouldn't be able to convert.

Puget Sound broke the deadlock with a run scored off a single to left field by freshman Brock Makishima. However, Whitworth managed to tie the game with a one run groundout by Jacob Doughty.

In the bottom of the 9th inning, the Loggers capitalized on an intentional walk on Jack McCullar to secure the win with an RBI single to right field by Makishima, bringing home the winning run after Makana Murashige's steal.

Makishima had two hits that secured him the RBI's on both runs of the day.

Game 2:  Puget Sound 6, Whitworth University 2

Again in the second game, the lead-off batter is walked, but this time a base hit follows and Harvey strikes out the next two batters to end the first inning. The Loggers would take the lead after consecutive hits by Drew Kamihara and Franklin to score one run in the bottom of the 1st.

The game progressed with Puget Sound extending their lead gradually. In the bottom of the second, the Loggers added two more runs with RBI hits from freshman Preston Crockett and Franklin. In the bottom of the 4th Puget Sound scored another run off Jack McCullar's single.

Then, in the bottom of the 6th, Puget Sound extended their lead with two more runs, one coming off a sacrifice fly and the other from a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

In the top of the 7th, Harvey impressed the crowd by making an extraordinary catch behind his back on a hit up the middle from Austin Paul.

Whitworth managed to score two runs in the top of the 4th inning but couldn't mount a comeback, as Puget Sound's pitching held them off for the remainder of the game.

The Puget Sound baseball team will be back on Logger field tomorrow, March 30, at noon to finish out the three-game series against Whitworth.
