Women's Soccer Battles Case Western to Begin Weekend at Home

TACOMA, Wash. (Sept. 6, 2024) - Loggers Women's Soccer began their weekend with a 5:00pm kickoff against the current 16th-ranked Case Western Reserve University Spartans.

The Spartans took the lead nearly as early as possible with a goal in the second minute by Sydney Schenk, assisted by Alexis Sassower. Then, another goal in the 23rd minute, and the third for the Spartans came just after halftime in the 51st minute.

However, the Loggers weren't going down without a fight. Junior defender Leila Hausia-Haugen netted her second goal of the season in the 57th minute, shortly after the Spartans' third.

Then, freshman defender Bre Fulton-Kaneshiro was assisted by Logger goalscorer Hausia-Hagen in the 78th minute, bringing the Loggers within one goal of a tie game. Sadly, it was too little too late for the Loggers, who had an on-target shot percentage of 60% - far higher than the Spartans' 37.5%. Both squads finished the game with six corner kicks, and UPS out-fouled Case Western eleven to seven, but the visitors took home two yellow cards along with their win; both were issued in the frantic last few minutes of the match.

The Loggers hope to use this result as an opportunity to fall upwards and springboard into Sunday's match against Claremont as they have only faced ranked opponents thus far this season: #1 California Lutheran, #22 Pomona-Pitzer, and #16 Case Western. None of these matches resulted in wins for the Loggers, but they do serve as a promise to the type of play Logger fans can expect moving forward.

When considering more than just the final score, it's clear that the Loggers can hold their own and will continue to bound towards a Northwest Conference championship - and beyond.
