SPOKANE, Washington (January 4, 2025) -- The Puget Sound Loggers (5-6, 0-2 NWC) fell short against the Whitworth University Pirates (10-1, 1-1 NWC), 97-88, in their second Northwest Conference game of the season.
Whitworth led for most of the first half, but the Loggers kept it close, never trailing by more than six points. Puget Sound cut the deficit to two and was down 37-35 at halftime.
In the second half, the Loggers shot over 60% in the paint, from beyond the arc, and at the free-throw line. Despite the high shooting percentage, Whitworth outshot the Loggers by 10 attempts and was able to extend its lead. Puget Sound also committed 20 turnovers — twice as many as the Pirates — which led to 24 points for Whitworth. The Pirates stretched their lead to 13, and despite several four-point plays by the Loggers, Puget Sound couldn't close the gap.
Taj Phillips led the Loggers with a season-high 26 points, followed by
Will Pohland, who also set a season high with 21 points.
Ian Cook contributed 17 points and 8 rebounds.
The Loggers return home next weekend to face Pacific University and Linfield University. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.
