PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Loggers drop their first game in Northwest Conference play, falling to Lewis & Clark 58-21.
How it Happened
The Pioneers got off to a hot start, scoring three touchdowns within the first seven minutes of the game. They started to put together a drive at the end of the first quarter, pounding the ball down the middle with a high success rate.
Dre Dukes and
Nick Fernandez were able to find holes in the Pioneer's defense, chipping away and driving down the field.
Puget Sound just needed one play to start the second quarter to find the back of the endzone, as
Hayden Teeter found
Darius Bailey for a four-yard reception. A blocked extra point was returned for a two-point defensive PAT, making the score 23-6 in favor of the Pioneers.
After letting up another touchdown, the Loggers put together a solid drive to end the half. They went 73 yards in just under four minutes, finding the end zone with four seconds remaining in the half. Teeter used his arm talent yet again, this time finding
Joe Gallagher for a 16-yard score. A successful two-point conversion made it 14-30 heading into halftime.
After a nice defensive stop to start the second half, the Loggers couldn't quite get the offense going. The Pioneers took advantage of the extra possession, driving down the field for another touchdown. The Loggers responded well, though, as they marched down the field yet again. A pass-heavy offense got the ball down the field, and a pass interference call set the Loggers on the two-yard line. Dukes cashed in on first down, pulling the Loggers back within reach.
The Pioneers pulled ahead in the fourth quarter, putting together three more touchdowns. The Loggers dropped this one, 58-21, but hopes are still high. The team looks to use the momentum of homecoming week to win their first game of the season against Pacific Lutheran, next Satruday, October 11th.
Top Performers
Dukes had his first standout game as a freshman, putting together 139 yards and a touchdown, averaging 6.2 yards/carry. Bailey extended his receiving touchdown streak to four, as he now has a total of seven on the season. He led the team with 6 receptions and 62 yards through the air.
Coach's Thoughts
"In our system of play, we value holding onto the ball and sustaining drives," said head coach
Jeff Thomas. "Unfortunately, today we fell short in doing that. Had a lot of players making their first significant playing time for the Loggers today, and we will be better long term because of it."
