Loggers Keep Rolling With 2-1 Win Over Wildcats

TACOMA, Wash. – Katie Short and Hayden Goodman formed the ultimate winning combination for the Puget Sound Loggers on Saturday afternoon.

Short scored two goals off of Goodman corner kicks, and the Loggers jumped into first place in the Northwest Conference women's soccer standings by knocking off previously undefeated Linfield at Baker Stadium, 2-1.

UPS (5-2-2, 4-0-1—13 points NWC) leapfrogged Linfield (5-1-4, 3-1-2—11 points NWC) to the top of the conference ladder.

How it Happened
Freshman midfielder Short put the Loggers onto the board with 12:40 left in the first half. Sophomore defender Goodman took a corner kick from the right quadrant, and it floated toward the far post. It landed at the top left corner of the 6-yard box, and Short drilled it into the back of the net.

That same tandem made it 2-0 early in the second half. This time, Goodman's kick came from the left side. It was headed in traffic outside the 6, and Short, playing near the right goalpost, knocked it with 38:30 left.

Linfield, the highest-scoring team in the conference with 21 goals coming into the weekend, made it 2-1 with 12:09 to go. A Wildcats player had been knocked down in the box, but play continued. The ball came out to Ruby Lacktrup playing just inside the top right corner, and she lofted a shot the flew high over Loggers junior goalkeeper Gianna Maldonado and into the top left side.

The Wildcats had two more opportunities at an equalizer. But a free kick from 40 yards away went straight into Maldonado's arms with 4:10 remaining. Then a corner kick with 2:15 to go flew over everyone in front of the net and went out.

Top Performers
Short's goals were her third and fourth of the season. … Goodman, already Puget Sound's leading playmaker, boosted her assist total to four. … Maldonado made three saves to pick up the win. … Linfield averages 10.7 shots per game, but was limited to just seven by the Loggers. … UPS got off eight shots.

Coach's Thoughts
"We played a tough Linfield team today who put pressure on us to close out the game," said Logger head coach Stephanie Cox. "Great job by Kate Short to continue to dominate on both attacking and defensive set pieces! Proud of our resilience to get another important conference win!"

What Happens Next
The Loggers complete another back-to-back weekend set on Sunday when they host Pacific. Kickoff at Baker Stadium is at noon, and it will be the first game of a doubleheader. The men face Pacific at 2:45 p.m.
