Loggers Tie Conference-Leading Whitman 0-0

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Whitman Blues have been pouring in goals and piling up wins. The Puget Sound Loggers stopped them cold in both departments on Saturday.

Sophomore goalkeeper Luke Mamiya made five saves for his second solo shutout of the season, and UPS came away with a 0-0 tie against undefeated Whitman in a Northwest Conference men's soccer game at East Field.

Mamiya was the first goalkeeper this season to keep the high-scoring Blues (46 goals) off the board.

How it happened
It was four weeks ago in Spokane when Whitman knocked in four goals in the final 16 minutes of the game to beat the Loggers, 4-1. But on Saturday, while the Blues had a 13-7 advantage in shots, Mamiya and the Puget Sound defense responded.

The biggest response came with just nine minutes left in the game. With multiple players converged inside the UPS 6-yard box, a Whitman shot was on its way into the net when senior defender Connor Barnes dove and kicked it off the line.

The Loggers ( 7-7-4, 6-6-3—21 points NWC)  have picked up results in their past two games, having defeated Linfield last week, 4-1.

Whitman is now 13-0-6, 12-0-3—39 points NWC. The team's 46 goals is the second-highest total in the conference.

Top performers
Sophomore forward Jackson Smith fired three of Puget Sound's seven shots, with three of those on goal. Junior midfielder Rhys Foote had two shots, one of those on goal.

What happens next
The Loggers conclude their season on Sunday when they host Whitworth at East Field. Kickoff is at 1:45 p.m. That will be the second half of a doubleheader, as the UPS women meet Whitworth at 11:00 a.m.
