SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Loggers conclude their season against the Whitworth Pirates, putting up a solid fight against the Northwest Conference Champions.
How it Happened
As they have done nearly all season, the Loggers won the coin toss and chose to receive. They put their high-powered passing offense on the field early, as
Hayden Teeter led the team down the field. Nicky Fernandez got some solid gains on the ground, opening up the passing lanes for Teeter. This led to a 43-yard touchdown pass to
Joe Gallagher, giving the Loggers an early 7-0 lead.
After the defense forced a three-and-out, the Loggers continued to roll. They marched down the field into the Pirates' territory, getting within field goal range. A missed 53-yarder by
Charlie Reisman set up the Pirates, who took the next possession for a touchdown.
The Loggers didn't back down, though, as another long drive to start the second quarter put the team in scoring position yet again. This time, Reisman redeemed himself, hitting a 32-yarder to give the team a 10-7 lead.
A six-play, 63-yard drive by Whitworth put the Pirate back in the lead, and then a solid Logger stop on defense helped hold Whitworth to a field goal. Down 10-17, the Loggers put together a solid drive to close out the half. Teeter helped lead the team down the field with 11 straight passes, but a fumble in the red zone capped off the half for the team.
The second half started off well for the Loggers, as they were able to force a punt on the Pirates' first drive of the half. A punt of their own turned the ball over to Whitworth, who then drove the ball down the field for a touchdown. Teeter and the offense continued to thrive through the air, but a fourth-down stop on 4th and 1 halted the Loggers' momentum. Whitworth took the ensuing drive down for another touchdown, making it 31-10 Pirates.
The Loggers got some momentum in the fourth quarter, as Fernandez got the job done on the offensive side of the ball. A 22-yard run pulled the team within two scores, as the team needed a stop on defense.
What happened instead was two massive plays by both offenses. Whitworth's Drake Matthies took the ball for a 74-yard score, and on the very next play, Teeter found Dylan Whitfield for a 75-yard score. This made it 38-24 with just over eight minutes left to go in the fourth. Three plays later, the Pirates struck again, pulling ahead 45-24.
In case the fourth quarter didn't have enough scoring, the Loggers pulled back with a 5-play, 75-yard drive down the field. This time, he found
Darius Bailey for a 9-yard score, as the team only needed 0:46 seconds to bounce back.
A six-yard Pirate touchdown pass made it 52-31, and a fumble recovered for a touchdown after a solid Logger drive capped off the scoring for the afternoon. The Loggers concluded their season in Spokane, putting up a solid fight against the NWC Champions
This game was a memorable one, though, as
Hayden Teeter broke yet another record. With three touchdowns today, he officially breaks the record for the most passing touchdowns by a Puget Sound quarterback in school history. This caps a phenomenal season by Teeter, as he joins the Puget Sound greats for his incredible performance.
Coach's Thoughts
"Today didn't end the way we hoped, but I'm incredibly proud of the work this team put in from August through the final whistle," siad Logger head coach
Jeff Thomas. "This group broke multiple school records and showed glimpses for what Puget Sound Football can be.
Hayden Teeter finishes the season leading the country in passing, and
Joe Gallagher is among the national leaders in receptions, with
Darius Bailey among the nations leaders in touchdown receptions. Incredible accomplishments that reflect the commitment of our entire offense."
"Most importantly, this program is built on a foundation that's only getting stronger. With 70 of our 97 players returning as freshmen or sophomores, the future is bright. Our seniors have poured so much into this program and leave a standard we will carry forward. We're grateful for them, and we're excited for what this young roster can grow into."
