LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Puget Sound's late comeback falls just short, as the Loggers drop the final game of their California trip 60-58
How it Happened
An early Oxy foul got the game started, as
Carmen Cruz knocked down the first two points of the game at the line. The Tigers then jumped out in front, extending their lead to four on a shot from beyond the arc. The Loggers found themselves down 10-19 with a minute left in the quarter, but a final layup by
Claire Thompson put them within striking distance heading into the second quarter.
Autumn Hill got the log rolling in the second quarter, drawing the Loggers within four with a layup and a made free throw. After finding themselves down as much as eight, the Loggers went on an 8-0 run to even the score.
Mele Sake led the charge this time, scoring six straight points to tie the game at 23 apiece. The teams went back and forth, but a final three by the Tigers put the Loggers down 27-30 at the half.Â
The Loggers continued to hang in the game, but Occidental pushed forward as well. With just under five minutes left in the third quarter, the Loggers found themselves down seven yet again.
Cayton Smith then found seven straight points, pulling the Loggers right back into the game. A
Hailey Quiggle three gave the Loggers the lead, and a final free throw by Sake made it 42-40 at the break.Â
The Tigers continued to press onward, though, as Occidental jumped out to yet another seven-point lead. Back-to-back buckets by Quiggle made it 49-50, but another small run by the Tigers extended the lead back to six with three minutes to go. A made tip-in by
Savannah Pohl and three by Smith made it a two-point game with 0:14 seconds left. A Quiggle steal gave the Loggers a final chance, but a missed shot at the buzzer left the Loggers just short.Â
