McMINNVILLE, Ore. — Puget Sound women's tennis pieced together a convincing 5-2 victory over Linfield on Saturday afternoon, dominating in doubles and securing the match with depth in the singles lineup at the Linfield Tennis Center.
The Loggers (3-9, 3-8 NWC) wasted no time establishing momentum.
Paige Shinall and
Kaylee Yamada set the tone at No. 1 doubles, cruising past Kaitlynn Canubida and Emma Tuttle 6-1. On the No. 2 court,
Hyla Chatham and
Pearl Buck followed suit with a 6-0 shutout of Sundi King and Lilianna Cano. The third doubles match was a forfeit in favor of UPS, giving the visitors a clean sweep in doubles and an early 3-0 lead.
Puget Sound sealed the match with strong play in the middle of the singles lineup.
Krishna Agrawal rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, while Chatham overwhelmed Cano 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. Buck added another straight-set victory at No. 5, dispatching Elise Reese 6-4, 6-0.
Zoe Hughes picked up the sixth point via forfeit.
Linfield (1-11, 1-10 NWC) managed to grab two points on the day. Tuttle battled back from a second-set loss to outlast Yamada in a marathon match at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 2-6, 11-4. Canubida followed up with a hard-fought 6-2, 7-5 win over Shinall at No. 2.
In the last Logger-Wildcat face off, the Loggers fell 5-2. Coach Matt Simons was nothing but ecstatic after the match, praising the team's perseverance and positive attitudes after a few tough weeks on the court.
The Loggers next face Lewis & Clark on April 5th in Portland.
