PORTLAND, Ore. – On a packed Saturday at the LC Tennis Dome, Lewis & Clark women's tennis team claimed a decisive 6-1 victory over Puget Sound after the Loggers came away with an early win in doubles.
Puget Sound (3-11, 3-10 NWC) started strong in doubles action, claiming two of the three matches and showing early signs of rhythm and resilience. The No. 2 tandem of
Pearl Buck and
Hyla Chatham delivered the first point with a 6-4 win over Hayley Kreps and Kacie Lau. Shortly after,
Krishna Agrawal and
Zoe Hughes outlasted their opponents in a tight 7-6(2) battle at the No. 3 line, securing the doubles point for the Loggers.
The Pioneers (8-9, 6-6 NWC) salvaged one in doubles behind Susanna Anand and Charlotte Makoni's gritty 7-5 win at the No. 1 slot, setting the stage for a shift in momentum.
That shift came quickly.
In singles, Lewis & Clark flipped the script with a dominant display, sweeping all six matchups to secure the overall win. Anna English opened the charge with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 result over
Hyla Chatham at No. 4, quickly leveling the match at 1-1. Kreps followed with a come-from-behind win over
Paige Shinall at No. 2, recovering from a first-set tiebreak loss to win 6-1, 6-0 in the final two frames.
At the top of the lineup, Makoni battled back against
Kaylee Yamada in a three-setter. After dropping the first set, Makoni steadied herself to take the next two, 6-3 and 6-2, and give the Pios a 3-1 lead.
From there, Lewis & Clark never looked back.
Straight-set wins from Kacie Lau, Allison Gabelman, and Lauren Smith-Euben sealed the deal. Smith-Euben's 6-0, 6-3 effort over Hughes at No. 6 put the final point on the board.
Puget Sound hosts Whitman next Saturday, and then Whitworth on Sunday, for the final regular season matches of the year.
