Box Score TACOMA, Wash. — Puget Sound struck first, but a four-run fifth inning powered Whitworth past the Loggers in a 5-1 Northwest Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at Logger Softball Field.
Senior shortstop
Aislind Dail gave the Loggers an early spark with a solo home run in the third inning, her first of the season. Dail turned on a fastball and over the left field wall to put Puget Sound ahead 1-0.
That early advantage held until the fifth, when the Pirates took advantage of Logger miscues. Puget Sound committed four of their six total errors in the frame, allowing Whitworth to plate four unearned runs. A series of misplays, including a throwing error by pitcher
Alison Madia and a mishandled grounder by Savanna Manley at third opened the door for two RBI singles from the Pirates.
Whitworth added an insurance run in the sixth when Reegan Ellis, who went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, drove in Camryn Sage with her third hit of the day.
Logger pitcher
Alison Madia (2-6) went the distance, allowing 12 hits and five runs — but only two of them earned — while striking out two. Despite the final line, Madia kept the Loggers competitive through four scoreless innings before the defensive breakdowns.
Reams (1-4) earned her first win of the season, throwing a complete game with five hits, three walks, and six strikeouts. The Pirates' right-hander also contributed at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Rylie Madariaga paced Puget Sound with two hits, while
Alyssa Figueroa,
Mikayla Johnson, and Dail each added one. However, the Loggers stranded seven runners and couldn't generate enough offense against the Pirates' steady pitching.
In game two, the Loggers were just barely beaten by the Pirates.
Estrada was strong in the circle, tossing all seven innings while allowing just six hits, one earned run and striking out six without a walk. The lone run crossed in the top of the fifth, the only blemish in an otherwise stellar outing.
At the plate, the Loggers produced 10 hits but left 11 runners stranded. Puget Sound had runners on in every inning except the fourth but couldn't deliver the big hit to break through.
Alyssa Waldo led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 day, while senior catcher
Claire Besancon and shortstop
Aislind Dail each chipped in two hits.
Whitworth's Lyman matched Estrada pitch-for-pitch and earned the shutout victory. She scattered 10 hits and did not issue a walk over seven frames, striking out three in the process.
Puget Sound threatened in the bottom of the seventh, getting a one-out single from Dail, but a fielder's choice and popout ended the game.
The Loggers will look to bounce back Sunday when they continue their home series against Whitworth. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am.
